Aquarium Filtration: Internal Filter or External Filter

Filtration aquarium

The role of the aquarium filter is to mechanically clean the water of its suspended particles, through different filter masses and especially to host purifying bacteria which, as part of the nitrogen cycle, will transform harmful substances (fish droppings, food scraps, pieces of plants) into substances tolerable for the fish.
A filter guarantees clear, crystal-clear water and good oxygenation for your fish and allows you to delay water changes but does not eliminate them in any way.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR FILTER?

The main characteristics of a filter are the flow rate and the total volume of filtration media . This information can be found in the characteristics of each product on the site.
Manufacturers also offer a wide variety of filter media available for each filter. These generally include wadding (perlon) for mechanical water filtration, synthetic foams, and ceramic noodles in which purifying bacteria will settle. Chemical filter media such as activated carbon can also be found to eliminate unpleasant odors and is highly recommended after treatment in the aquarium (fish diseases, anti-algae).

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILTER:

In order to meet all aquarist needs, there are a large number of filtration systems: exhaust filter , internal filter , external filter , suspended filter , ultraviolet filter , etc.

Internal and external filters are the most commonly used devices in aquariums:

- The foam filter , also called an exhauster , is useful for small capacity aquariums (under 40 liters) or aquariums intended for breeding. It is not connected to an electrical outlet but positioned on the air pump. It filters by mixing the water.

- The internal filter , also called "interior filter", is placed inside the aquarium. It is very easy to install and particularly suitable for small aquariums. However, it is criticized for the space it takes up in the aquarium and its low filtration volume. For aquariums larger than 100 or 120 liters, prefer the external filter.

- The external filter , also called "external filter", is placed outside the aquarium, in the cabinet or next to the cabinet. The advantages of the external filter are multiple: large filtration volumes, preservation of the fish's living space, easy cleaning operation.

- The hanging filter is a hybrid variant between external and internal filtration used for small tanks or tanks requiring low filtration such as for shrimp maintenance or a hospital tank.

- The settling tank is becoming more and more widespread, especially for aquariums of a certain standing and a volume generally greater than 300 liters. It is a block, placed in a corner of the aquarium or outside the aquarium (requires drilling of the tank) and in which we find a good part of the equipment, such as the pump , the filtration masses and the heater .
