    Description

SERA Silikat-Test (SiO3) — Reliable test for silicates in aquariums

The SERA Test Silicates (SiO3) allows a simple and reliable determination of the silicate content in fresh water and sea water, essential to prevent diatomaceous algae blooms and maintain a healthy aquatic environment.

    Strengths

    • Reliable detection of silicate (SiO3) pollution. Simple to use, fast results in minutes. Suitable for freshwater, saltwater, and garden ponds. Identifies levels above 1 mg/l requiring corrective action.

    Features

    • Contents: Complete test kit (cuvette, reagents, color chart). Analysis type: Colorimetric. Units: mg/L (ppm) of silicates (SiO3). Test time: Approximately 15 minutes. Storage: Store at room temperature (15–25°C) and away from light.

    Kit contents

    • 1 graduated 10 ml cuvette. 3 reagent bottles (Reagent 1, Reagent 2, Reagent 3). 1 color chart for comparison. Printed instructions.

    Instructions for use (steps)

    1. Rinse the cuvette several times with the water to be tested, then fill it to the 10 ml mark. Dry the outside of the cuvette with a clean cloth. Add 6 drops of Reagent 1, close the cuvette, and shake; wait 5 minutes. Add 6 drops of Reagent 2, close and shake; wait 1 minute. Add 6 drops of Reagent 3, close, shake briefly, and let it react for 10 minutes (do not open the cuvette during the reaction). Compare the resulting color to the color chart by viewing the result from above in daylight (out of direct sunlight) to read the value in mg/l.

    Interpretation of the results

    • <1 mg/l: Silicate level acceptable for most aquariums. ≥1 mg/l: Increased risk of diatoms; consider treatment or reduction of silicates (filtration, specific resins, water source). High values: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for treatment, or use a suitable product to lower silicates.

    Usage tips and best practices

    • Test regularly (weekly or after water changes) to monitor progress. Avoid direct light when comparing colors. Clean the test chamber before and after each use to prevent contamination. Carefully close reagent bottles after use and do not mix up the caps.

    Precautions and safety

    • Do not inhale any gases that may be released during the reaction; do not open the container during the waiting period. Keep out of reach of children and animals. In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse thoroughly with water and consult a doctor if necessary. Follow storage instructions (15–25°C, protected from light).

    Applications

    • Freshwater aquariums. Marine aquariums. Garden ponds. Water quality control after changing the water source or using new components (sand, rocks).

    Why measure silicates?

Silicates promote the growth of siliceous algae (diatoms), which can cover decorations, glass, and plants, degrading both the aesthetics and the biological balance of the aquarium. Regular monitoring allows you to anticipate and correct pollution before it becomes a problem.

    Additional information

    • Suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Convenient format for spot tests or regular monitoring. Does not replace a complete diagnosis but provides a targeted measurement essential for diatom prevention.
